As AI continues to drive advancement, industries are steadily moving toward multifunctional and intelligent solutions, making cross-industry collaboration essential. As a global leading materials manufacturer, Covestro has accumulated extensive experience and expertise through years of collaboration with enterprises across various sectors, supporting cross-industry development with its comprehensive product portfolio.
In the energy storage market, AI evolution has transformed storage systems from traditional charge-discharge devices into AI-driven energy management systems. Addressing the intelligent operation and maintenance requirements of solar storage charging systems across various environments, Covestro provides high-quality polycarbonate solutions for energy storage equipment. These solutions offer excellent weather resistance and flame retardancy while supporting lightweight, thin-wall designs and diverse color options. This ensures stable operation of storage equipment both outdoors and indoors, maintaining intelligent decision-making capabilities at all times.
In transportation, the industry consensus is clear: vehicles are evolving toward electronics integration and intelligent features. The development of smart surface technology enables the integration of multiple functions within panels, replacing complex mechanical knobs in automobiles and delivering an enhanced driving experience. Covestro's polycarbonates play a crucial role as the primary material for smart surfaces. The company's Merlin and Kurama demonstrators featuring IMSE® (In-Mold Structural Electronics) technology enable the integration of functions, such as lighting, haptics, displays, and electronic circuits, into a seamless surface, offering exceptional design freedom while maintaining lightweight properties.
Low-Carbon Materials Drive Advancement in Sustainability and Smart Technology
In the era of sustainable consumption, creating low-carbon products has become a key differentiator for businesses. Meanwhile, carbon emissions and environmental impact are increasingly incorporated into global and regional market entry requirements.
As an upstream industry leader, Covestro leverages its expertise and experience, combined with its international supply chain and service network, to provide high-performance, diverse sustainable solutions that reduce carbon emissions and environmental impact while expanding global business opportunities.
The company's sustainable solutions include:
- Post-consumer recycled polycarbonates (Makrolon® R series), produced through mechanical recycling, significantly reduce waste and are verified by UL Environmental Claim Validation (UL ECV), meeting EPEAT requirements. These materials offer reliable, traceable sourcing and performance comparable to virgin materials, with stable supply availability. PCR materials with up to 90% recycled content are widely commercialized in the electrical and electronics industry, offering flexible content options for customers. Covestro's collaboration with DELL Technologies in exploring closed-loop recycling for laptops further leads the sustainable transformation of electronic product recycling.
- The Makrolon® RE Series, attributed by bio-circular feedstocks, effectively reduce carbon footprint and are ISCC PLUS certified. The solutions meet the latest EPEAT 2025 and Amazon Climate Pledge Friendly requirements while maintaining the same high performance and quality as fossil-based polycarbonates. This allows direct upgrading from Covestro's fossil-based polycarbonates without additional testing, significantly reducing material replacement costs and time.
- For waste that is difficult to mechanically recycle, Covestro has developed breakthrough chemical recycling technology. The RP-Series products contain chemically recycled attributed feedstocks and have successful applications, further expanding the possibilities of achieving circular economy.
Additionally, as the 2025 EPEAT standards incorporate guidelines for reducing hazardous chemicals, safety has become increasingly crucial in achieving sustainability goals. Covestro's latest flame-retardant polycarbonate materials achieve UL 94 V-0 thin-wall flame retardancy without intentionally added PFAS additives (NIA-PFAS), complying with the guidelines in the latest updated EU’s PFAS restriction regulation proposal while maintaining high performance requirements.
In today's work and life environments, smart devices are ubiquitous. Covestro's high-performance, sustainable solutions have mature applications in WiFi routers, laptops, VR headsets, power banks, headphones, and other smart devices, driving sustainability alongside AI innovation.
