As vehicles become more digital and electrified, Covestro is expanding its high-performance materials portfolio with innovative film solutions developed specifically for head-up display (HUD) cover lens applications. These films offer exceptional optical quality, reliability and durability—enabling safer and more immersive driving experiences, particularly in electric vehicles.

HUDs are transparent display systems that project critical driving information—like speed, navigation and alerts—directly onto the windshield in the driver’s field of view. As digital cockpits become standard, HUDs are increasingly vital to modern vehicle design.

Tailored to industry needs

To meet growing demand from China’s carmakers—who are at the forefront of global electric vehicle innovation—Covestro has developed new grades under its Makrofol® film series, engineered specifically for HUD cover lenses. These polycarbonate films, mounted as dust covers, ensure long-term image clarity and system reliability through advanced properties including:

  • Birefringence control: Maintains image fidelity by preventing color shifts as light passes through the cover lens
  • Chatter mark control: Minimizes visual interference for optimal display clarity
  • UV resistance: Enhances weatherability and protects against long-term sun exposure
  • High durability: Ensures stable performance in high-temperature and high-humidity environments

“We have gained deep insights into the technical challenges faced by carmakers in China and globally, enabling us to develop HUD solutions that deliver both optical precision and stability under demanding conditions,” said Dr. Caroline Wolff, Head of Specialty Films Asia Pacific at Covestro. “This innovation reflects our long-term commitment to the Chinese market. As smart cockpit technologies become more widespread, we believe our high-performance films can play a key role in the transformation of vehicle designs.”

Makrofol® is available in multiple grades for HUD cover lens applications—including Makrofol® DE920, Makrofol® OF924 and Makrofol® SR934—giving OEMs and Tier 1 suppliers the flexibility to select the optimal material based on optical performance and environmental durability requirements.

Already in mass production with several Chinese carmakers, this film solution for HUD cover lens will be publicly showcased for the first time by Covestro at Booths 2-088 and 2-109 during the Enmore Automotive Conference (EAC), taking place June 4–6, 2025, at the Hangzhou Grand Convention and Exhibition Center.
